Radiohead Announce New Album Through Code?

…This is the first contact Radiohead has made from their home planet in some time. Actually, their first contact was “Yes WeAreStill Alive.” Well, it’s a good thing they told us. Otherwise, we would have absolutely no way of knowing. We realize Thom Yorke had to do the solo album thing and Radiohead isn’t really on the clock right now, but seriously…what is taking so long? What kind of announcement is this?

Radiohead, what does it all mean?As if this band weren’t disturbing enough (can you listen to Kid A without having convulsions? I know I can’t), they have incorporated their own secret language as a way to update their fans on the goings on of their demented universe. The code above was placed through a special link on Radiohead’s website (”Hodiau Direkton” on the top of the main page). Now, a series of coded posts have been adding up on the site. According to a blog entry on Rollingstone, ateaseweb.com had figured out how to read the coded messages made of “worm buffet icons.” Though when you click on the link, it sends you to an image on the European fansite citizeninsane.eu. This is the alphabet that they go by, which would match the “Code code code” image above letter for letter.

Both codes were placed on the Radiohead site on Saturday Sept. 22nd with a third added on. What did this one say? “Xendless.” What does it mean? I have no idea. Endless? Sendless? “Xendless Xurbia” was one of the old page titles on the site. Is it merely a reference to that, or does it go farther? Perhaps this is the track listing (or clues to the track listing). The “BlinkYourEyes” code is semi-confirmed to be song lyrics to “Bodysnatchers,” a new track that should see the light of day on the record. If and when it ever comes out. This makes sense. Right?

A forth image was added to the link “Hodiau Direkton” as well, and is pictured below. If the key on citizeninsane is correct, the code reads “qmbvt jcmff gobbc jmjua.” Does anyone else want to slap Thom and Johnny in the face? The Gods mock us. Since BBC and Rolling Stone (and surely others) have reported the code system, it seems Radiohead have decided to throw everyone off and post a message that makes absolutely no sense. Perhaps there is more than one key?

My guess, however, is that this is the album cover. And as we know from Radiohead album covers past, it doesn’t have to make a shred of sense. We may never know, considering the band is technically unsigned. Johnny Greenwood confirmed to Paste 2 weeks ago that the album was done. So, where is it? A video of an audio tape mix was posted on Radiohead’s site in June, and features clips from “Open Pick,” “Arpeggi,” “All I Need,” “Bangers n’ Mash,” and “Down is the New Up.”

Surely, the band will keep adding more messages everyday. If only every band could think of such an inventive way to build up anticipation for their album and drive their fans completely mad. I’ve tried my best to figure out Radiohead, and these are the three possibilities: a) They are trying to be weird, b) They are pretentious beyond comprehension, c) They really are just fucking weird.Maybe we’re all just boxes that make different faces and move our arms around.

Maybe we’re all just insane.
