Songoftheday: “New York Is Killing Me (Remix)” by Gil Scott-Heron feat. Nas

Gil Scott-Heron’s new record is heavy.

After spending much of the last two decades struggling with drug addiction and serving two sentences in prison, the 61 year old singer and poet released a comeback album in February on XL entitled I’m New Here. As he states on the album’s first single (and one of the best songs of the young decade), Scott-Heron now finds himself “walking side by side with the devil,” and “standing in the ruins of another black man’s life.” Heavy.

Produced by XL founder, Richard Russell, the electronic/blues flavored album is a solid foundation for an eclectic hip hop remix. See the DJ Enuff premiered “New York is Killing Me” remix featuring Nas (below via Fader) for proof.
