Austin Texas’ Fun Fun Fun Fest (not to be confused with LA’s FYF Fest, which I will be stage-hopping at this weekend) just released the full line-up and schedule for their 5th annual music festival at Waterloo Park this November. Headliners for the two day fest include MGMT, A-trak, RJD2, Devo, and Mastodon (plus a Friday Kick-off party with Weird Al?). Fx3!

In a surprise (or not so surprise?) announcement last week, both the New York and Los Angeles Fat Beats stores (a brief history) will be closing their doors forever in September. The record shops will celebrate their final week with a full schedule of free in-stores from 4-9pm, including this Saturday, the final day in New York, with Premier, Just Blaze, A-Trak, Pete Rock, and more (in other words, it will be very crowded in there). The schedule for the LA location (which closes on the 18th) is due soon.

The online store and record label will continue operation after the closings.

San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival goes down the weekend of October 16 and 17 on the actual Treasure Island, which is located just next to the Bay Bridge with a view of the Golden Gate in the distance. The 2 day fest announced their 2010 line-up today, which includes headliners LCD Soundsystem, Deadmau5, Belle & Sebastian, and The National.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am PST. I’m extremely tempted.

Some fun sleepers on the 2010 Outside Lands line-up (The Whigs, The Soft Pack, Daniel Lanois!), but not enough to count on one hand or offset the combo of Grateful Dead and Kings of Leon headlining. Um…

I’ll hold out for Treasure Island.

Burning, a new live concert film from Mogwai (directed by Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnac of La Blogotheque’s Take-Away Shows), was shot at the band’s sold-out three-night residency at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg in April 2009. The Scottish post-rock band will release an accompanying live album with the film called Special Moves (tracklist below).

Mogwai are also giving away Special Moves’ “New Paths to Helicon Pt. 1″, a 7 minute epic and signature Mogwai track first released as one of the band’s early singles in 1997. I had never heard it before, and I’m glad I was sitting.

Burning and Special Moves are due August 24.

The officially confirmed realness cover artwork for Drake’s Thank Me Later is not much to look at, and gives me blurry squinty-eye headaches, among other things. I was willing to forgive if this image was 3-D – but, I happen to have a pair of 3-D glasses on my desk (doesn’t everyone?), and I can confirm that the cover is, in fact, not in 3-D.

So, why?

As someone who grew up in Queens, had friends in metal bands, and played shows at L’amour, I feel the need to somehow commemorate the life of Peter Steele of Type O Negative (who died late last night of heart failure at the age of 48), even though A) I was not a fan, B) he was not a fan, and C) his life was all about death.

The 6′7”, long black haired goth/metal singer had faked his own death before, written about death, and named albums things like Life is Killing Me. I did appreciate the band for poking fun at themselves, and embracing their image in an almost satirical manner. I once asked him for an autograph outside of L’amour for a friend of mine. I said she was a big fan, and he said, “what is she, deaf?” It was brilliant. R.I.P.

If there’s one good thing that comes out of me not splurging on Coachella tickets, it’s not having to choose between the last 20 minutes of MGMT’s set and Major Lazer. Anyway, the complete Coachella 2010 Set Time Schedule is up on the official site. For those of you who hesitated, LAT announced yesterday that the festival has officially sold out. Meet me at Origamy Vinyl for Record Store Day and the jj show at Echoplex. Two Boots pizza, anyone?

AFP (Amanda F*cking Palmer) announced in a blog entry titled, “FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST,” that she has split from Roadrunner Records after a 2 year battle with the label. To commemorate the occasion, she is offering up a new song “legally and free of charge.”
