Providence, Rhode Island’s Deer Tick recently dropped their 3rd release in 2 years, and have just announced a non-stop fall tour  in support of the record. The Black Dirt Sessions, named after the upstate New York studio where it was recorded, has a darker, more ‘Black Dirt’ appropriate sound than the band’s previous releases. Brooklyn’s The Drums are promoting their recently released self-titled, debut LP with a free download of their latest single, “Down by the Water.” The band ’slows the tempo’ on this track, which was originally featured on their 2009 Summertime! EP and sticks with you as easily as their band name (The Drums!). The Drums are also co-headlining a North American Tour with Surfer Blood that kicks off September 11 (dates below).

The physical release of the The Drums LP is due September 14.

Kings of Leon weren’t the only band that got sh*t on this past Friday night in St. Louis (but they’re definitely the most amusing). New York City band, The Postelles, also survived the “shit-storm” at the Verizon Amphitheatre as the openers for the show, supporting their recent White Night EP (co-produced by Albert Hammond, Jr.). The band will take their catchy Strokes-rock on the road with Interpol for the next few days (complete tour dates below), hopefully sans more bird sh*t.

Austin Texas’ The Strange Boys have mapped out a busy late summer/early fall schedule in support of their sophomore album, Be Brave. Fresh off of a head-turning set at this year’s Glastonbury (which included a cover of Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man”), the band kick off a two month North American tour starting with a stop at Jelly’s Pool Party in Brooklyn with Future Islands on August 15.

Ra Ra Riot were just a few blocks from my apartment last weekend at that Beach Ballyhoo festival, but I missed them because life (happens). My intro for this post, therefor, is shot! However, I’m 98% sure that they played new music from their upcoming sophomore album, The Orchard, and got everyone really excited for it.

The band recently announced an extensive North American Tour beginning in August (dates below – including a show with Devo at the Ohio State Fair Aug 4), as well as offered up a preview of The Orchard with a countryside performance of new track, “Keep it Quiet” (above).

On a visit to Daytrotter this past February, The Dodos performed alternate versions of 3 songs from their 2008 breakthrough album, Visiter. The tracks were recorded in a studio in the basement of the Mosser Hotel in San Francisco with the Magik Magik Orchestra, a collective of classically trained Bay Area musicians. The biggest transformation by far was on “Ashley”, which here is made up entirely of strings and backing vocals by a 4-piece women’s choir. Stream the entire session on Daytrotter.
