The Drums wanted the video for album highlight, “Down by the Water”, to “directly reflect the song itself, and be as simple as possible,” noting that both the video and song are a tribute to the girl groups of the 50’s and 60’s (and awkward, ungraceful arm movements?). The Brooklyn band’s self-titled Moshi Moshi debut is out physically on September 14. (Stereogum premiere)
The only thing better than a free Saturday night event at The Getty (also free parking after 5pm if you have one of those automobiles) is a free Saturday night event at The Getty plus one buzzband.
Brooklyn’s The Antlers headlined this weekend’s outdoor, twilight show with an hour long set of their somber, ambient distortion ballads. Some halfway decent photos of the night, below (with the help of Girl Genius).
While I was watching The Antlers free set at The Getty’s Saturdays off the 405 series, (more to come on that), the Sunset Strip was blocked off for its second annual music festival with Smashing Pumpkins, Common, Kid Cudi, and other very random selections (Slash feat. Fergie?). During his set on the street fest stage, Cudi performed 2 new tracks (one called “Ghost” and the other untitled) from his upcoming Man on the Moon II: Legend of Mr. Ragar.
The untitled track is above. The less impressive “Ghost” is over at DatNewCudi.
Above is Ryan Gosling’s band, Dead Man’s Bones, being not bad at all (in fact, quite good and kind of adorable), performing their song, “Pa Pa Power”, at Chancellor Place assisted living facility in Pasadena, CA. The band’s self-titled, debut album is out now on Anti, and they play FYF Fest next weekend at LA State Historic Park. They also need to book a show Halloween weekend, stat. (P4K)
After a couple of singles released across the pond over the past few months, including the wonderfully obnoxiously 80s “Better Than Love”, Hurts are set to release their RCA debut, Happiness, next week. The Manchester duo were saving their biggest punch for last in power-pop ballad, “Devotion” featuring Kylie Minogue.
I’m not sure how long the above video will remain online, but you can also refer to this link for a listen.
If you were not expecting 2 new releases from Sufjan Stevens this year, you are not alone. While the first had a very Sufjan state-album era folk vibe, his upcoming full length, The Age of Adz, has a “deliberately electronic” disclaimer. “I Walked” is the first incredibly delicious taste of the record, due October 12. Streaming below via Stereogum.
Wavves meet a Hipster Alien from space in the new clip for “Post Acid”, one of the many highlights from their sophomore LP, King of the Beach. That is also definitely John Norris, whose voice whisks me away to a time when videos were at least sometimes on MTV. (P4K)
Since I started dancing at 9am this morning (not literally, but I’ve been dancing in my mind), I thought I’d bring the party into 11am with a new track from J-WOW of Buraka Som Sistema with Mexican DJ, Toy Selectah. “Mo’chaxo” comes from Enchufada’sHard Ass Sessions Volume III, a compilation that encourages re-interpretations of Kuduro “through the lens of their own experiences.” The Portuguese label will release the comp on September 7.
“FM Tan Sexy” is the second track to surface from El Guincho’s long-awaited sophomore LP, Pop Negro. It’s yet another vintage tropical afrodub Caribbean dance party from the Spanish beat maker, streaming below via GvsB. The Alagranza follow-up is due September 13 via Young Turks.
