It is, unequivocally, Mos Def week at My Poproks. Above, he performs The Ecstatic’s “Quiet Dog” on Letterman, one of the albums funkier and more abstract tracks. The Ecstatic has been the only thing happening on my iPod for the past few days. Albumoftheweek. Top 10 contendor.

Mos Def was on 106 & Park Friday to promote tomorrow’s release of The Ecstatic (white people really like artsy Mos Def album covers featuring blurry photography with no text inspired by black and white indie films). He freestyled to GZA’s “4th Chamber,” and discussed whether or not he still considers himself an “underground” rapper. [...]

It’s been rumored that Mos Def just walked into a Neighborhood store, grabbed a bunch of stuff and said he would do a photo shoot if he could get it all for free. Andhedid. And that’s why Mos Def is cooler than you are.

I am on the fence with this new Mos Def track, “Casa Bey,” form his upcoming Ecstatic, but I’d like to hear it in the context of the album (do people still do that?). My favorite taste of the record so far has been that “Flowers” promo. There’s no questioning this video, however. Can’t go [...]
